Chiang Mai is not only the biggest city in Northern Thailand, it is also a university town and a cultural hub. There are some tourists here, however most of the people we saw seemed to be locals. The city is still inside the old city gates and is a maze of restaurants, massage parlors, coffee shops, temples and parks. At night the streets close down to cars and the night market takes over. It’s very easy to spend multiple days simply walking around, eating and people watching.
