WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM AUSTRALIA?

Danger, heat, and loads of laughs. That’s what you can expect form Aus. Durig my time down under, I becamer a true Queenslander. I resided above the Line of Capricorn, where the air was hot and humid, the floods were a real danger, and creatures from the Jurassic age still live.

My first three months were spent in one of the oldest rainforests on the planet, in the Daintree Rainforest. Here I worked and lived among the pythons, cassowaries, crocodiles and backpackers to name a few. While I realize the Daintree is usually a one-day excursion from near-by Cairns and most people would opt for Uluru or any other of Australia’s wonders, I lived in the rainforest and became immersed in the underbelly of Australian’s backpacker world. This is a world that is not as easily navigated as New Zealand’s. The resources for backpackers is small, and the working conditions to stay for a second or third year extension on the working holiday visa are to be contested.  Be that as it may, working in the Daintree was similar to being “on the mountain” as we called it in Tongariro, and the experiences are not one I’d trade. But if I were to go back in time and do it over knowing what I know now, well, if you’re going to Aus let me lend you a few tips.

The rest of my time in Aus was working on a catamaran that sailed a three day, two night cruise along the Whitsunday Islands. My time working on the boat was extraordinary, and I wish I had been able to continue my stint. (Another win for Covid-19.)

The Australian people are some of the most fun people you will ever meet. They love to laugh and laugh and laugh, and have no regard for what American’s would call “PC.” Aussies are the best guests, the best friends, and maybe not the best role-models. But who cares. Those Aussies will grab life by the balls and giver ‘er a go!

Backpacker budget

AccommodationHostels will cost you $15-$35 USD/night for a dorm room.

Food – It’s hard to find cheap food in Australia unless you’re cooking yourself. As always, grab a hand pie if all else fails.

Transportation – Australia is big, so if you didn’t buy a van, I would suggest flying to get around. (Expect $100-$200 USD/flight.)

Suggested daily budget – $50-$80 USD (Note: This is a suggested budget assuming you’re staying in a hostel, eating out a little, cooking most of your meals, and using local transportation. Using the budget tips below, you can always lower this number. However, if you stay in fancier accommodation or eat out more often, expect this to be higher!)

Australian Food

1
Chicken Parm A classic Aussie dish (served with chips, not mash)
2
Vegemite on Toast Or a toastie with vegemite, mate.
3
Tim Tams A cookie for your coffee! Bite off both ends and use as a straw.
4
Aussie BBQ Grab a 4X Gold or a Great Northern Beer and throw some shrimp on the barbie. Now you've got yourself an Aussie Christmas!

How to speak Australian

Americans say “Good eye” to say “G’day.”

Or as Slim Dusty puts it….

Now when Italians meet they all go crazy
The blokes all like to hug each other too
The Yanks invented “hi” “and see you later”
While the Pommy will shake your hand and say “how do you do”

Now watch out for a Frenchmen or he’ll kiss you
The Spaniards go for “Olah” and “Olay”
But in the land of the cockatoo, pole cats and the didgeridoo
When you meet an Aussie ten-to-one here’s what he’ll say

G’day g’day, how ya goin’, what d’ya know, well strike a light
G’day g’day, and how ya go-o-o-in’
Just say g’day g’day g’day and you’ll be right

It’s a greeting that you’ll hear across Australia
From Geraldton to Goulburn, Gundagai
It’s as dinkum as the Dingo and the Dahlia
And you spell it with a G, apostrophe, a D-A-Y
